Project Information:
Elm Street residence is situated on a brownfield site in Cambridge’s prime city centre location. PiP were approached to demolish the existing single storey garages to facilitate the re-development of the site for residential use.
The design consists of 8 self-contained units that sensitively introduces high quality dwellings which respond to their surrounding context. By reinstating the ‘back lane’ character of the street. Using a simple palette of materials of buff brick is used for the walls took influence from surrounding buildings. The deep reveals on the front facades, header courses above openings and stacked linear bricks for recessed panels and the chimney breasts provides crisp, contemporary detailing. By using natural zinc for the roofs, rainwater goods and chimney pots, these complement the bricks and weather well in time whilst providing a contemporary twist.
Internal layouts have been carefully designed to maximise usability of space, aiming to provide modern contemporary living. Window bays have been designed to provide natural surveillance whilst maintaining privacy between the units and the neighbouring residential buildings.
